Art in NicosiA
European-Mediterranean Art Association (EMAA) organised the exhibiton, entitled “Art in NicosiA” between September 18 – October 18, 2008. This exhibition is part of a set of biennial exhibitions initially conceived as annually under the name of “EMAA May Exhibitions,” which were realised in 2005 and 2006.
EMAA attaches importance to these art events, namely “EMAA May Exhibitions and Concerts” for two reasons: first, to centre art events in the old city of Nicosia; and second, to encourage experimental and authentic artistic production and practices by offering the opportunity to get them exhibited.
In the scope of this project, three exhibitons have been held so far, each opening up a new horizon of artistic targets. Among these artistic targets were to carry out art onto the street and shopping centres, to introduce new perspectives by collaborating with different curators, to meet outstanding pieces from international contemporary art scene with people of Cyprus, to meliorate the relations between two communities by exhibiting the works of Greek-Cypriot artists.
EMAA exhibitions continue being the only art event so wide in scope in North Cyprus. Its range of artistic events comprised this year solo and concept mixed exhibitions, video art exhibitions on street, art talks, modern dance performance on street, music performance on street, and short film screenings in Eaved House. The closing event, which concluded one-month of intensive arts programme, was a poetry reading, entitled “Some Lines from Turkish-Cypriot Poetry.”
